Background
Headway East Northants was founded in 1992. A local initiative to provide a self-help
group for brain injury survivors was established and the resulting service grew from
this initial beginning. Since this time the membership has grown and the services
have developed into a day centre based organization. Additional funding sources,
such as the local Primary Care Trust (PCT), have been sought over the years and utilized
to allow the continual evolution of the centre and its services.
The organization aims to provide support to individuals who have suffered an Acquired
Brain Injury (ABI) and where possible provide support within the centre through therapeutic
based activities, information and support. The service users consist of individuals
who are not in a deteriorating condition as a result of their ABI and who did not
become ABI survivors as a result of birth complications or brain related cancers
(due to their progressive nature). The service is not, however, simply limited to
providing services for the ABI survivors. Over the years the growing needs of families,
friends and carers to receive support was also identified and as a result much of
Headway East Northants’ current work incorporates services to accommodate their needs
also.
