Why I became a volunteer

by Joan Simpson

When I retired from school I decided that I would like to do some voluntary work of some sort. I approached the volunteer bureau and they eventually pointed me in the direction of Headway East Northants.

Having looked around and met the service users, I could see that this would be worthwhile and interesting, and as I knew very little about head injuries I would also learn  something.

I have now been at Headway for 9 years, and I am still learning. From day to day things are never the same, you can never know what you will find when you arrive at the centre.

However the general atmosphere is friendly, more like a family, and everyone seems to enjoy themselves. For me personally, I feel so fortunate to be in  a position to help improve  the lives of others in some small way. It is not an easy option, but in the long run is so rewarding that you do not notice the down sides, of which there are few.

Headway is now part of my life, and the service users and families with whom I come into contact are now good friends.

Finally I would say to anyone wishing to do voluntary work, try out the Head Injury day centres, and if you get as much satisfaction as I have over the years you will do well.
