Headway East Northants encourages and motivate individuals into both physically and mentally stimulating participation with social activities and involvement in community life in order to:
- increase self-
esteem - prevent family breakdown
- reduce physical and mental abuse
- reduce the need for residential care
- reduce the rate of suicides amongst brain injured people
Headway recognises that it is essential to provide specialist social rehabilitation, emotional and physical support as soon as possible following discharge from hospital, in order that people can come to terms with the change in their lifestyle and deal with practical and emotional issues.
Some of the main problems experienced by people with ABI, which result in a dependency on their families; carers; health professionals and social care agencies are:
- physical disability
- lack of insight
- poor memory
- inability to plan and carry out daily activities
- low self-
esteem - depression
- anger
- frustration
- family breakdown
- other mental health issues
Headway East Northants believes in life after brain injury and focusing on what Service Users can achieve. To this end we provide a wide variety of activities both inside and outside the Centre. A recent example of the activities embarked upon by Service Users was a visit to Welland Gliding Club. The positive feedback from Service Users and the jump in the confidence and self esteem they exhibited reinforced these beliefs. The Service Users also regularly attend the Multi Activity Club at the Pemberton Centre in order to participate in wide variety of activities such as archery and trampolining. These form part of the vast array of activities our Service Users enjoy during their time at Headway and encourage increased levels of physical activity as well as enjoyment, coordination and stamina.
